There's no single best meal planning app. There's the best one for how you cook, what you're aiming for and how much you want the app to do for you. This guide compares the main options so you can pick the right fit.

Full disclosure: we make Mealful. We've tried to be honest about where each app shines, including where we think a competitor is the better choice.

Three kinds of meal planning app

Three types of apps: automatic planner, recipe manager and calorie tracker
  • Automatic planners suggest meals for you, usually around nutrition goals
  • Recipe managers organise recipes you already have and let you plan them onto a calendar
  • Calorie trackers log what you ate, with meal planning added on as an extra

Knowing which kind you want narrows things down quickly.

Mealful: best for planning, shopping and tracking in one place

Mealful generates a day or a week of meals around your calorie goal, using your diet and dislikes as hard filters and favouring cuisines you love. Every ingredient goes onto one merged grocery list sorted by category, and you can log what you actually ate, from a photo if you like. You can also import recipes from a link, pasted text or a photo. It's available in ten languages. The trade-offs: it's mobile only, with no web app, and the full Pro recipe library and unlimited photo scans need a subscription.

Eat This Much: best for precise macro targets

Eat This Much is built around hitting exact calorie and macro numbers, and it factors in budget and schedule too. It's a great fit for people who track closely. The free version plans one day at a time; weekly plans and automatic grocery lists are Premium features.

Samsung Food: best for recipe discovery

Samsung Food, formerly Whisk, has one of the largest recipe libraries around, a strong recipe saver and shareable shopping lists. The paid Food+ tier adds AI meal plans and pantry features. It's the one to choose if inspiration is what you're missing.

Plan to Eat: best for your own recipe collection

Plan to Eat lets you import recipes from websites and social media, drag them onto a calendar and get a combined shopping list. It doesn't generate plans for you, but if you already know what you like to cook, it's very well organised. It's a subscription with a free trial.

Paprika: best one-time purchase

Paprika is a long-standing recipe manager with a web clipper, meal calendar, pantry and smart grocery list. It's a one-time purchase per platform rather than a subscription, which many people love. Like Plan to Eat, planning is manual.

MyFitnessPal: best if tracking comes first

MyFitnessPal is primarily a calorie and nutrition tracker with a huge food database. Its meal planner, with recipes and grocery lists, is part of its top Premium+ tier. If logging is your main goal and planning is a bonus, it's a solid choice.

Where Mealful stands out

  • It closes the loop: plan, shop and track in one app, so your plan and what you actually ate live side by side
  • Diets and dislikes are hard filters, so a vegetarian plan never sneaks in chicken
  • One merged grocery list that shows which recipe each item is for and when you'll need it
  • Photo logging that reads nutrition labels when they're in frame, and says so when it's estimating
  • Recipe import from links, text and photos, so your favourites aren't stuck in screenshots
  • Planning, groceries and logging are free

Features and pricing change often, so check each app's store listing for the latest details before you decide.
