How you start the morning often shapes the rest of the day. A healthy routine doesn't need to start at 5am or involve cold showers. It just needs a few small habits you can repeat.

Drink a glass of water

After a night's sleep, a glass of water is an easy first win. Keep a glass or bottle by your bed.

Get some daylight

Natural light in the morning helps set your body clock, which supports better sleep at night. Open the curtains, step outside or have breakfast by a window.

Move a little

A short walk, some stretching or a few minutes of exercise can boost energy and mood. It doesn't need to be a full workout.

Eat a balanced breakfast

If you're hungry in the morning, a breakfast with protein and fibre keeps you full and focused:

  • Greek yoghurt with berries and oats
  • Eggs on wholegrain toast
  • Overnight oats with nut butter
  • A smoothie with fruit, spinach and yoghurt

Delay the phone

Checking emails and social media first thing can make the day feel reactive. Try giving yourself 15–30 minutes before you look at your phone.

Look at the day ahead

Take a minute to check your plan: what's on today, when you'll eat and what's for dinner. Knowing dinner is sorted removes a decision you'd otherwise face when you're tired.

Start with what's easy

Pick one or two habits, not all of them. Once they stick, add another. A small routine you do every day beats a perfect one you abandon after a week.
